YouCut Initiatives Eliminate $120 Billion in Wasteful Government Spending

As a member of the Republican Deputy Whip Team, I helped launch the YouCut program several months ago and recently supported the elimination of another example of wasteful spending in Washington.

The tenth YouCut initiative was defeated by a majority of Democrats who have voted down all YouCut projects. To date, I have voted to eliminate more than $120 billion in wasteful government spending under this new Republican program. My last vote would have saved taxpayers up to $1 billion by supporting a plan that requires the collection of unpaid taxes from federal employees.

While all Americans have an obligation to pay the taxes they owe, federal employees are especially obliged to pay their share of taxes because they draw their compensation from the American taxpayers. Apparently, the Democratic majority doesn’t see it the same way, voting against this and every other YouCut suggestion to cut back on wasteful government spending.

I’ve heard from the folks in Northeast Florida, and they’ve sounded a desperate call for Washington to change its spend, spend, spend mentality to one of saving. YouCut is a great way to accomplish that goal – one step at a time.

House Democrats have defeated the following proposed spending cuts on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives:

• Week one: $25 billion - Eliminate duplicative welfare program.

• Week two: $30 billion - Eliminate federal employee pay raise.

• Week three: $30 billion - Reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

• Week four: $15 billion - Sell excess federal property.

• Week five: $15 billion - Prohibit hiring new IRS agents to enforce health care law.

• Week six: $1.2 billion - Prohibit taxpayer funding for union activities.

• Week seven: Millions of dollars - Prohibit stimulus funding for promotional signage and recoup previously spent funds.

• Week eight: $1.2 billion - Eliminate first class Amtrak subsidies.

• Week nine: $1.1 billion - Eliminate the Advanced Earned Income Tax Credit.

• Week ten: More than $1 billion – Require the collection of unpaid taxes from federal employees.

Crenshaw Secures Funds for Mayport

Ander Crenshaw announced that the full House of Representatives approved the Fiscal Year 2011 Military Construction (MILCON) and Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations bill (H.R. 5822). Crenshaw served as Acting Ranking Member and managed the bill for Republicans during House floor debate on Wednesday. H.R. 5822 now moves to the United States Senate for consideration.

The bill provides critical funding needed for military construction, including $2 million in planning and design funds for the continued nuclearization of Naval Station Mayport and $74.53 million for Marine Corps projects at Blount Island. The legislation also funds family housing for our troops and their families and other quality of life construction projects, and provides resources for the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Related Agencies.

Commenting on House passage of the bill, Crenshaw issued the following statement:

“This bi-partisan bill provides key resources to address the needs of our servicemen and women, our veterans, and our fallen heroes. I am honored to help guide the measure to final passage in the House and look forward to its passage in the United States Senate.

“At home and around the globe, our soldiers deserve key resources as they fight the war against terrorism and protect our national security no matter where they are. This bill moves us in that direction by including $2 million in planning and design funds for continued nuclearization of Naval Station Mayport and $74.5 million to expand the capability of Marine Corps Blount Island Command to handle equipment returning from Afghanistan and Pakistan.

“The Navy ruled that national security dictates that the East Coast have two nuclear aircraft carrier homeports - Mayport being one of them. With the Quadrennial Defense Review reinforcing that decision, the work shifts to funding the projects needed to make this base nuclear ready. I have fought for Mayport from day one and will continue to do so until the day a carrier sails in to homeport on the First Coast.

“At Blount Island Marine Corps Command, funds for expanding storage capabilities, overhauling equipment, and shipping will help make sure our Marines receive well-maintained equipment in a timely manner. These resources mean that Blount Island will be able to accept more equipment returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and service our pre-positioning ships and equipment more efficiently.

“For our veterans, my proposal to re-allocate $14 million to the Veterans Benefits Administration to allow the VA to retain 306 education claims processors was included in this final bill and will ensure that GI education benefits claims are processed quickly. We have all supported and lauded the benefits of the new GI education benefits bill, but we must be attentive to complaints from angry veterans who begin a semester in college only to have their tuition bill still unpaid months later.”

Crenshaw Gets Assurance that Mayport will Homeport Carrier

Congressman Ander Crenshaw today said that Navy Undersecretary Robert Work’s testimony at a July 22 House Armed Services Committee Hearing reaffirmed the 2010 Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) ruling that national security dictates that Naval Station Mayport should homeport a nuclear aircraft carrier.

“Navy Undersecretary Work’s testimony underscored what four years of review, countless hearings, and intense review of comprehensive military analyses showed: national security grounds the decision that our country should have two nuclear aircraft carrier homeports on the East Coast,” said Crenshaw, a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies. “His testimony couldn’t be more clear, and I look forward to continuing my work here on Capitol Hill to direct key resources to Mayport.”

In response to Virginia Congressman Wittman’s inquiry on whether the Mayport decision requires further review under an efficiency initiative, the hearing transcript notes that Undersecretary Work responded:

“Sir, I don’t believe we do. There is a balance between strategic requirement as well as efficiencies. In this case, the department as affirmed by the QDR, that the strategic rationale for the homporting decision is a good one. And I’m reminded of – this reminds me somewhat of – before the DDG-1000 program was truncated, the Department of Navy wanted to single up into one yard for efficiency sake, And we made the case the we would wave about $300 million per board – or per ship.

“And it was the Congress that intervened and said look, you cannot take the risks of singling up into a single yard. Because what would happen if that yard was hit by a catastrophic event. And the wisdom of Congress was proven a year later in Katrina when the yard down in the Gulf Coast was knocked out for awhile.

“There was no objective risks analysis – would give you a number on why you would do that. It’s a strategic judgment of leadership that we basically say this is a good call. And would trump a mere efficiency argument.”

Crenshaw Becomes a Charter Member of House Tea Party Caucus

Today I joined Michele Bachmann and 50 other Members of Congress in creating the House Tea Party Caucus to promote America’s call for fiscal responsibility, adherence to the Constitution, and limited government.

Everywhere I go, my constituents are clear - they have had enough of the spending, the bureaucracy, and the government knows best mentality running rampant today.

The House Tea Party Caucus will espouse the timeless principles of our founding fathers - principles that all Members of Congress have sworn to uphold.

Ander Honors America's Veterans

On Memorial Day, we take time as individuals and as a nation to honor the servicemen and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, while pausing to remember that American troops continue to fight for our liberty, at locations around the globe.

All of these valiant soldiers - past and present - stand at the forefront of our thoughts on this somber day as we thank them for their selfless devotion to our country. Each of them has a special story to tell. Each deserves remembrance in our thoughts and at the ceremonies being held in their honor.

As I work to ensure that the military and veterans’ needs are met on Capitol Hill, my thoughts are never far from my hometown of Jacksonville and the cities and towns across this Congressional district. The First Coast’s strong military tradition commands respect, particularly on this day. From its defense installations which have anchored our national security, to the servicemen and women and their families who live here, to the service organizations who support our Armed Forces, the region is an example of patriotism at its finest.

Let us all gather and remember this history and the faces of those who have helped create it. Some are still with us and some have passed by, but they all hold a place in our hearts as we take a moment to say thank you. We owe them a great of gratitude so that we may continue to live in a free country. I thank them all and pay tribute to their valiant service on this and all days.

Crenshaw Issues Statement on Signing of Health Care Bill into Law

Ander Crenshaw issued the following statement following the President’s signing of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act – legislation that Crenshaw voted against on the floor of the United States House of Representatives on Sunday, March 21.

“This health care bill is now law, and many are celebrating. But, with the President’s signature today, comes a long list of backroom deals that will cost Americans millions of dollars. Take the Louisiana Purchase where $300 million in extra Medicaid aid goes to that state, $100 million for a public hospital in Connecticut, and $99 million for hospitals in Tennessee. And there’s the Cornhusker Kickback where Nebraska gets $100 million in added federal Medicaid assistance.

“I have stood alongside the residents of North Florida from day one for affordable health care; not higher taxes, not big government, not big deficits, not less Medicare benefits, not more expensive care, and certainly not back room deals. The Democrats’ bill raises taxes by over $500 billion, costing thousands of jobs. It also spends more than a trillion dollars, cuts Medicare for our seniors by over $500 billion, and spends $10 billion to hire 16,500 new IRS employees to enforce new taxes and penalties.

“That’s why I voted for the Republican plan last November and so strongly back that bill’s principles today. It lowers health care costs, increases access, maintains Medicare benefits, ends lawsuit abuse, and preserves the doctor/patient relationship – all without raising taxes. That’s right for Florida, right for the nation, and that’s what I will continue to fight for.”
